The Holiday:

Sponsored by Laguinitas, Oakland Organics, and Oakland Parks and Recreation Foundation, Oakland rap group Hieroglyphics is headed back to their hometown to launch the 4th Annual Hiero Day, a mayor commemorated holiday celebrating independent musicians. With 25 acts, food, local vendors, graffiti art, a skate park contest, and more, Hiero Day 2015 is set to be the biggest Hiero Day yet. Available to all ages, the event attracts Hip Hop lovers from all over Oakland to converge, listen to local talent, and support local businesses and grassroots organizations. “[Hieroglyphics] have propelled local artists into the spotlight through this festival,” Oakland North explained in their coverage of Hiero Day 2014. Following performances from all the underground acts, the iconic rap collective end the event with a showcase themselves. “Atop seamless segues between beats, the handful of MCs relentlessly cycled through every shade of ferocity,” East Bay Express described of their performance at the 2014 event.

Hiero Day 2015 will be hosted at 3rd and Chestnut St, Oakland, CA from 11am until 7pm on Monday September 7th, 2015. Due to exceeded capacity and expenses at last year’s event, Hieroglyphics have made changes to location and pricing. Previously relying on public contributions to put on the event, the rap group will charge an entry fee of $19.93 to all attendees except “active youth.” This includes youth that are members of a local nonprofit organization. Active youth are required to present a Membership ID for free admission. If pricing is an issue for a potential attendee, they are encouraged to email ICANTPAY20DOLLARS@HIERODAY.com and submit a 250-500 word essay about what they do to benefit their community.

Hiero Imperium Records:

Founded in 1997 in Oakland, California, Hiero Imperium Records was founded by artists Del The Funky Homosapien, Casual, Pep Love, Domino, and the group Souls of Mischief, consisting of members A-Plus, Opio, Phesto and Tajai. After releasing albums on several major labels, the collective established their own independent Hieroglyphics Imperium label, website, and merch company in 1997, and are credited as creating the blueprint for independent rap labels. Few other rap collectives have withstood the test of time and are still considered as vibrant, respected, and talented as when they first stepped on the scene 20+ years ago. They are also credited as being one of the first hip hop groups to work with skate, snow, and surf companies. Created by Del the Funky Homosapien, their “third eye logo” is considered the third most recognized music logo according to Rolling Stone Magazine, and has been seen tattooed on fans all over the world.
