Duncan Coulter McKillop passed away in the St. Thomas Elgin General Hospital on April 27, 2015 at the age of 92. He was born in St. Thomas on April 3, 1923, son of the late Duncan Alexander and Eva (Coulter) McKillop. Duncan is survived by his son, Duncan (Carolyn) McKillop of Summerside, PEI; Jane (Frank) Coffey of Kingston, Ontario; Charlotte Arbuckle of Calgary, Alberta; Martha (Michael) Khan of Windsor, Ontario; and Anne (Peter) McKillop-Ostrom of Ottawa, Ontario. Sadly missed by 14 grandchildren: Julia, Ian, Graeme and Jane McKillop; Edward, Anne, Thomas and Margaret Coffey; Natasha (Chris) Missiuna and Alyssa Arbuckle; Michaela and Madison Khan; Blair and Nicola Ostrom; one great grandchild, Clara Missiuna; brother-in-law, Angus Robertson; nieces and nephews. Predeceased by his sisters, Nancy McKillop and Mary Robertson. Duncan was a double honours graduate of the University of Western Ontario in History, Economics and Political Science. He then graduated with a Law degree from Osgoode Hall and practiced law in St. Thomas and West Lorne for over 40 years. His passion was local history, and after his retirement, he enrolled in master and doctorate courses at the University of Western Ontario which greatly assisted his research skills. Duncan was instrumental in reviving the Elgin Historical Society (1967), in developing the Pearce-Williams United Church Christian Centre (1960), in creating the West Prince Genealogical and Historical Society (1980), the Tyrconnell Heritage Society (1993) and the Talbot Heritage Society (1996). Duncan served as Ontario Genealogical Society Provincial Director (1974-1977) and was Chair of the Finance Committee for two years. He was involved with others in compiling the names of the 1877 Historical Atlas of Elgin County by lot, concession and township. Other projects included reviewing local diaries, letters and ledgers. As well, he studied and spent considerable time researching Colonel Talbot. Duncan resided at Metcalfe Gardens in St. Thomas and then was hospitalized at St. Thomas Elgin General Hospital. His family wishes to thank the staff at both facilities for his wonderful care. Cremation has taken place.
A celebration of Duncan’s life will be held at Williams Funeral Home, 45 Elgin Street, St. Thomas on Sunday, May 3rd at 2:00 p.m. A reception will follow and a private interment will occur later in the day at the Evergreen Cemetery in West Lorne. Friends and family will be received from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. at Williams Funeral Home on Saturday, May 2nd. As an expression of sympathy, donations in Duncan’s memory to Knox Presbyterian Church Food Grains Bank Project or Pearce Williams United Church Christian Centre Building Projects would be greatly appreciated.
