Simona Halep Upsets Serena Williams On Day 3 Of Round Robin ...

This is why they play the game. On paper, all signs pointed to Serena Williams running through the Red Group at the 2014 WTA Finals with little trouble reaching the semifinal round. However, after being handed her worst defeat since she was 16, Serena is facing the possibility of not making it out of the round robin stage. Simona Halep breezed past an err0r-prone Williams, winning 6-0 6-2. Simona moves to a commanding 2-0 in the Red Group while Serena drops to 1-1. The victory was Halep’s first against a top 3 player, breaking an 0-8 career mark. Serena is still in the running for a semifinal berth. Her next match is against Eugenie Bouchard, who lost for the second time in Singapore, this time 1 and 3 to Ana Ivanovic. Genie has looked out of gas at the WTA Finals. The question is how much of a fight will she be able to muster against Serena, who likely will be keen to bounce back from the lopsided loss to Simona. Genie and Serena will play on Thursday, along with two matches from the White Group. If Serena loses, Simona will make the semifinal round and, as players have done in the past when they don’t need to win, probably won’t exert herself too much against Ana Ivanovic on Friday. If Serena wins, the Simona-Ana match takes on great importance as more scenarios open up as to who would advance from the Red Group based on tiebreaker rules.
