Six years after the release of her dance/pop album, Michelle Williams returns to her Gospel roots for her fourth solo studio release Journey To Freedom. Not only did the Child of Destiny team up with her musical sisters Kelly Rowland and Beyonce for her number one single ‘Say Yes’, but she also collaborated with R&B songbird Fantasia as well as Inspirational Heavyweights Lacrae and Tye Tribbett.
After opening the project with a heartfelt plea to God on Need Your Help, Williams moves into the jumpy dance influenced Yes. Although the first two tracks are moving and fast paced, she doesn’t really get a real chance to shine until she gets to the third selection, Everything. Michelle has an epiphany of sorts during her journey in life and realizes that God is more than everything she needs. Her vocals are clear and strong and very fitting to the track. Williams delivers Fall with an energetic force and continues to prove that inspirational music can encourage you to move as well.
Free is another track where Williams shines vocally and pushes through challenges on a very encouraging ballad and finds freedom, whereas Just Like You switches back to tempo while she makes a personal declaration to be just like God. Belive In Me is her personal testimony of how she found the strength to return to her Gospel roots after the becklash she continued to get for stepping outside of her comfort zone.
The lead single If We Had Your Eyes, which peaked on the US R&B Songs Charts at #19 and US Hot Gospel Songs Chart at #22, tells a story of how much better the world would be if everyone looked at life through God’s eyes. Michelle and Fantasia compliment each other very well on the record is marks itself as one of the standouts on the project. The current single Say Yes finds Williams reuniting with her Destiny’s Child group members although it is not credited as a Destiny’s Child song. The catchy, raggae influenced selection has become one of the more notable tracks across the world for Michelle as a solo artist. The single has performed well commercially, peaking at number one on the Billboard Hot Gospel Songs and has also appeared on charts in the UK, France and Belgium across Europe.
Although still criminally underrated as a vocalist, Michelle Williams takes control of her destiny once again and delivers another solid solo album where she gets to showcase the side of her personality that makes her as genuine and true to her art as her peers.
