The Rhode Island College softball team traveled to Roger Williams University on last Friday, where they won both non-conference games that evening. Senior pitcher Michelle Sylvestre pitched all seven innings in the first game, only letting up one run. Senior Kristina Gingell helped lead the team in hits in the first game, going 4 for 6 at the plate. The Anchorwomen won by a score of 6-1.
According to Gingell, hitting is important in all of their practices.
“Coach is putting a strong emphasis on hitting in practice. On Friday night the hard work that we have shown in practice displayed that. We are a young team that still has a lot to work on, but we are only going to get better as the season goes on. Hopefully the sweep against Roger Williams marks the beginning of that,” Gingell said.
In the second game, the Anchorwomen were victorious again. The final score was 14-5, as RIC scored fve runs in the last inning. Freshman pitcher Lindsey Cabral pitched the first five innings and gave up only two runs. Senior pitcher Maria Darling came in for relief during the last two innings and let up three runs.
Darling has high hopes for the rest of the season going forward.
“I think that in the second game we continued to become a unit and gel together as a team to win. I personally plan to work hard and strive to get better each day. I have full faith in my team and think that if we stay focused, learn from each other, and keep that desire to win we can ride that road to win the LEC.”
The Anchorwomen’s overall record is 3-7. They have yet to face anyone in the Little East Conference. The Anchorwomen next face Wheaton College in a doubleheader this Tuesday at 3:30 p.m.
