It's Lupita Nyong'o vs. La Seydoux for The 2014 BAFTA Rising Star ...

BAFTA Rising StarOne of the main reasons many a movie buff, including yours truly, are fond of the annual British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) awards, is that, unlike higher-profile ceremonies such as the Oscars and Golden Globes, they also look out for the future of cinema, handing out a prize very suggestively baptized the Rising Star Award.

The roster of the trophy’s past victors consists of immensely talented young thespians, like Juno Temple, Tom Hardy, Eva Green and James McAvoy. Meanwhile, nominees not walking away with the gold in the end, but leaping to genuine Hollywood star status soon after include Chris Hemsworth, Tom Hiddleston, Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone, Jesse Eisenberg, Michael Fassbender, Ellen Page, Emily Blunt, Michelle Williams and Chiwetel Ejiofor.

With such a tremendous pedigree, it goes without saying it’s a great honor to merely be nominated for a Rising Star, so congrats Dane DeHaan, George MacKay, Lupita Nyong’o, Will Poulter and Léa Seydoux.

The five are the year’s standout youngsters, at least according to the BAFTA, and the winner will be chosen by a public vote. Of course, riding an enthusiastic wave of critical reviews and the hoopla of a a Golden Globe nom, Lupita Nyong’o of “12 Years a Slave” looks like the frontrunner.

However, the lovely Léa Seydoux, a Cannes champ earlier this year for “Blue Is the Warmest Color”, has to also be considered. Maybe Will Poulter (“We’re the Millers”) too, since more people saw the coarse comedy than “Slave” and “Blue” combined. Anyhoo, my vote goes to Lupita Nyong’o for the rawest, most unnerving performance of the year. And, quite possibly, the best all-around supporting role. Who’s with me?
