Ten students vying for titles of Homecoming king, queen « WCU News


Ten Western Carolina University students, including five women and five men, have been voted onto the Homecoming Court for 2013.


Voting by the student body to choose the court took place on campus Oct. 2. Final voting for Homecoming king and queen will be held Wednesday, Oct. 16.


The court will be presented and the king and queen crowned during halftime activities at WCU’s home football game against Elon on Saturday, Oct. 26. Kickoff is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.


Also, members of the court will participate in the Homecoming parade, which begins in downtown Sylva at 6:15 p.m. Friday, Oct. 25, and they also will take part in the Spirit Night Pep Rally that will be held at WCU’s Central Plaza at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 24.


Seeking the title of queen:


* Olivia “Chace” Bunn, a senior from Burlington majoring in special education, is sponsored by lower Scott Hall. A 2010 graduate of Western Alamance High School in Elon, she is the daughter of Frank Douglas Bunn and Sandra Michelle Williams.


* Savannah Leigh Forest, a senior from Mooresville majoring in hospitality and tourism, is sponsored by WCU’s Pride of the Mountains Marching Band. A 2010 graduate of Hickory Ridge High School in Harrisburg, she is the daughter of Greg Forest and Paula Forest.


* Haley Adriel Huffman, a senior from Morganton majoring in psychology, is sponsored by the Campus Recreation Center. A 2010 graduate of Hickory Christian Academy in Hickory, she is the daughter of Robert Huffman and Lynne Huffman.


* Mary Hannah Hughes, a junior from Rocky Point majoring in criminal justice, is sponsored by Orientation Programs. A 2011 graduate of Heide Trask High School in Rocky Point, she is the daughter of Philip Hughes and Kathy Hughes.


* Jill Haley West, a senior from Andrews majoring in secondary English education, is sponsored by the Teaching Fellows Program. A 2010 graduate of Andrews High School in Andrews, she is the daughter of Scott West and Shannin West.


Seeking the title of king:


* Pete Lamont Balthrop Jr., a senior from Winston-Salem majoring in criminal justice, is sponsored by the Alpha Gamma Delta fraternity. A 2010 graduate of West Forsyth High School in Clemmons, he is the son of Pete Balthrop and Donna Balthrop.


* Joel Gerome Jeffries, a senior from Gastonia majoring in music education, is sponsored by the Pride of the Mountains Marching Band. A 2010 graduate of Bessemer City High School in Bessemer City, he is the son of Joel Jeffries and Brenda Jeffries.


* Joshua Andrew Mathis, a junior from Murphy majoring in engineering technology, is sponsored by Kappa Sigma fraternity. A 2010 graduate of Murphy High School in Murphy, he is the son of Frank Mathis Jr. and Julie Mathis.


* Brandon Todd Truitt, a sophomore from Waynesville majoring in communication, is sponsored by Orientation Programs. A 2012 graduate of Tuscola High School in Waynesville, he is the son of Tom Truitt and Dayna Gerlach.


* Colby Reece White, a senior from Robbinsville majoring in secondary mathematics education, is sponsored by the Teaching Fellows Program. A 2010 graduate of Robbinsville High School in Robbinsville, he is the son of Kevin White and Crystal White.
