In a photographic studio in Hoxton, Michelle Dockery is demonstrating how to play a frock. She’s wearing a skintight vinyl dress, chewing gum and grinning mischievously while rubbing her arms vigorously against her sides to make the dress creak and squeak. Her own skin is almost as white as the dress — England-between-the-wars pale. Every so often she throws a shape, arches an eyebrow (eyebrows so iconic, they put Cara Delevingne’s in the shade), opens her mouth wide and laughs. And why wouldn’t she?
